Tested: voize language assistance system for care documentation

PPZ Nuremberg

More time with people, less bureaucracy: what has long been demanded in the care sector has been tackled by the Nuremberg PPZ as part of the ‘voize’ project with consortium partner Diakoneo. voize is a voice documentation system that works with the support of artificial intelligence (AI), learns and continuously improves itself. Instead of writing down data to be entered later on an inpatient computer, information can be documented directly by residents of care facilities. The scientific evaluation found that the voize app addresses a specific care need, supports carers, saves time and can be quickly integrated into everyday working life. More information:

Working when others are asleep - biodynamic light as support for shift work

PPZ Hanover

How can nursing staff working shifts be supported in their natural biorhythm? The PPZ Hannover looked into this question and found special biodynamic light as a possible support. Two lamps have been installed in the project ward in Hanover for some time now. The biodynamic lamps bring the natural course of light during the day and night into the duty room and common room, i.e. they provide short-wave light during the day and long-wave light in the evening and at night. The aim is to promote a greater sense of well-being, increased concentration and restful sleep after night duty. Read more …

Implementation guide for the introduction of technical innovations in care

PPZ Nuremberg

In Germany, the penetration of digital technologies in care practice is rather low compared to other countries. In addition, some of the innovations purchased are barely used after failed attempts at application or are abandoned altogether. This is where the implementation guide, which was developed at the Nuremberg Nursing Practice Centre with scientific support from the University of Bremen, comes in. It serves as a working aid for the introduction of technology in nursing care and describes concrete and experience-based success factors for implementation processes. Both the setting of inpatient care for the elderly and the clinical area are taken into account.

inmuRELAX - Practical test of the interactive sound cushion

PPZ Nuremberg

People in need of care often react to new or changed situations with anxiety and restlessness. An interactive sound cushion, which creates a meditative world of sound through touch, offers the possibility of stimulating the senses, inducing relaxation and regulating restlessness in residents and patients. The three practice partners of the PPZ Nuremberg tested the interactive sound cushion with the aim of demonstrating a possible effect of the cushion on the behaviour of the test subjects. A total of over 100 applications were recorded within six weeks. The published practical report focusses on the core results and statements from the trial and can be downloaded at https://www.ppz-nuernberg.de/inmurelax-ein-klangkissen-zur-entspannung/.

Technology presentation: Audiovisual experiences with Qwiek.up

PPZ Freiburg

Qwiek.up is an audiovisual projection device that was developed for experience-orientated care and has so far mainly been used in inpatient long-term care. The aid enables large-scale image sequences to be projected onto free room walls, ceilings or screens and can change its location and therefore its projection surface quickly and easily. Special videos and photos (so-called experience modules) are played via a USB connection. Among other things, nature-related modules (such as a visit to the zoo or a walk in the woods) and abstract modules (such as soap bubbles) are available. Individual content, such as family photos or videos, can also be stored on a standard USB stick. As part of a separate study, Qwiek has been integrated into everyday ward life in various intensive care units at Freiburg University Hospital since March 2021 and is being researched with regard to its potential to support carers in the care, activation and orientation of patients in need of care - especially those with cognitive impairments and/or bedridden patients.

15.09.2021 - Technology presentation: Interactive sound cushion ‘inmuRELAX’

PPZ Hanover

The inmuRELAX is an interactive sound cushion that is used for sensory stimulation. According to the manufacturer, it is suitable for people suffering from restlessness, dementia or stress. The inmuRELAX is classified as a Class 1 medical device, and its washable and disinfectable covers fulfil the usual hygiene requirements for hospitals. It has neither a display nor control buttons, which greatly simplifies handling, especially for patients. When the cushion is touched or moved, AI-based software constantly generates new, gentle sounds and easily perceptible vibrations. Held in the hands or on the body, the pillow can reduce arousal, provide relaxation and reduce sleep disorders. The inmuRELAX has been in use in the trauma surgery project ward at the PPZ Hannover since August 2021, where it is being investigated with regard to its benefits for patients and carers, among other things.

24.07.2021 - Tovertafel - an interactive, sensor-based game to activate people with dementia

PPZ Nuremberg

The Tovertafel, developed by Tover, is an interactive, sensor-based game that uses a light projector to contribute to the cognitive and physical activation of senior citizens. It is a technically sound and sophisticated game concept that has been developed for older people with moderate to severe dementia. The Tovertafel itself consists of a box with a projector, infrared sensors, a loudspeaker and a processor, which is attached to the ceiling. Thanks to sensor technology using hand recognition, the highly intuitive and easy-to-understand games are possible for all participants and are tailored to the needs of the target group. Various game scenarios can be projected onto any surface during a group activity or for individual care of people in need of care. The Tovertafel focuses on reducing apathy, restlessness and tense behaviour by using sensory and auditory stimuli to evoke physical and social activity and stimulate positive emotions.
In a monocentric study at the PPZ Nuremberg, the use of the Tovertafel in people with dementia in inpatient care for the elderly and its effects on an individual and organisational level will be investigated from autumn/winter 2021.

GrannyGuard Fall detection © pikkerton GmbH

24.06.2021 - Technology presentation: fall detection through image analysis

PPZ Berlin

Falls are sometimes unavoidable. This makes it all the more important to be informed as quickly and reliably as possible in all care areas.
The ‘escos Copilot Fall Detection’ product, which is based on the ‘GrannyGuard’ sensor system from pikkerton GmbH, recognises falls quickly and reliably. These are reported directly to the care staff's end devices via a mobile reporting system as well as signalled via the existing nurse call system. The GrannyGuard recognises people lying on the floor by evaluating low-resolution infrared images. The sensor system is characterised by a high degree of flexibility, low installation costs and fast response times.
A comprehensive evaluation of this product in terms of effectiveness and acceptance will be carried out by the Geriatrics Research Group at Charité Berlin as part of the PPZ Berlin from summer 2021 and will be published by them once it has been completed.

25.05.2021 - Technology presentation: Fall prevention through stand-up detection

PPZ Berlin

Getting residents out of bed is a highly relevant event from a care perspective in a wide variety of cases. For example, if a person at high risk of falling tries to get out of bed on their own. In all cases, it is very important to inform the care staff so that they can provide appropriate assistance and avoid costly follow-up events.

The ‘Copilot stand-up detector’ product, which is based on the ‘Bucinator Paulus’ sensor from Bucinator e.U., aims to prevent falls by recognising attempts to stand up at an early stage. The sensor is positioned under the side of the mattress and reliably detects sitting on the edge of the bed. The main advantages of this sensor system are its high level of flexibility and lower acquisition costs compared to alternative solutions. The message to carers, which is triggered immediately on leaving the bed, is intended to actively prevent falls, especially in people at high risk of falling, through rapid intervention, such as an escort to the toilet. Initial studies carried out by Harun-Rashid as part of a master's thesis at the Alice Salamon University of Applied Sciences do indeed indicate a demonstrably significant reduction in falls in the area of inpatient care for the elderly. Other studies, such as Hilbe et al. (2010), indicate a high level of effectiveness. An initial pre-study in the Theodor-Fliedner-Haus, carried out by the Ev.

20.04.2021 - Technology presentation: Physical relief through robotic assistance

Nursing Innovation Centre (PIZ)

Physical overload in day-to-day nursing care poses a major problem and the shortage of nursing staff even exacerbates the problem. It is precisely the nursing activities at the patient's bedside that are particularly stressful and lead to an increased incidence of musculoskeletal disorders, which in turn leads to an increased number of sick days or even premature retirement from the care sector. The Care Innovation Centre is researching the extent to which robotic assistance systems can provide relief. A prototype consisting of a lightweight robot attached to the care bed, a force measuring plate and a depth camera system has been put together for this purpose. Individual areas, such as the application of force during a movement or supportive holding, are being analysed in more detail with experienced practitioners. In an initial study with nursing staff, it was shown that the physical support provided by the lightweight robot when moving a patient simulator from the supine to the lateral position leads to a reduction and attenuation of the stress peaks that occur, which were measured using a force plate.
The associated publication is still in the acceptance process and will be linked for further information as soon as it is available.

05.06.2020 - Technologies support carers in their day-to-day work

PPZ Hanover

The Hanover Nursing Practice Centre has set itself the task of supporting nursing staff in acute inpatient healthcare through technical innovations in their day-to-day work. Currently, the accident surgery project ward is focussing on two problem areas: the care of patients with dementia and the prevention of pressure sores in immobile patients. Emotional robotics and an actively mobilising mattress system are therefore in use at the PPZ Hanover.

15.01.2020 - Initial progress in LIFE - Real-world laboratory for intensive care

Nursing Innovation Center (PIZ)

The PIZ's planning work for LIFE (Lab for Intensive Care Facility Experience) began at the start of 2019. LIFE simulates a single-bed room in an intensive care unit with the specific conditions there, such as the high work and alarm load. For this purpose, a conventional office was enlarged, the carpet was replaced with linoleum and a larger door was installed. However, the first hurdles became apparent when the drywall construction was completed. As the structural substance is designed for use as an office, further structural measures are currently required to install a ceiling supply unit. The room will also be equipped with a smart bed, a monitoring system and an intelligent care trolley. A workstation for care documentation will also be integrated.

28.01.2020 - Scientifically evaluating care innovation technologies - Workshop of the Evaluation Working Group

Cluster „Zukunft der Pflege“

On 14 and 15 January 2020, a workshop of WG 3 - Evaluation took place in Hanover. Representatives of research institutions from all PPZs and the PIZ took part. Moderated by Kai Huter and Tobias Krick from the PIZ, the two-day workshop discussed the criteria according to which care innovation technologies should be selected and how they can be scientifically evaluated. With regard to evaluation, there was also an exchange about the tests or studies that have already been carried out and those that will be carried out in the future - and the challenges that the PPCs face in this regard. The members of the evaluation working group see one possibility of utilising the extensive results of the workshop in the publication of a joint publication in the sense of a ‘lessons learnt’ article.

At a joint dinner (see picture), networking was strengthened through the exchange of further projects and experiences.

06.12.2019 - Alexa &Co: What care homes should consider when setting up voice assistants

PPZ Nuremberg

Older people who are particularly limited in their abilities can benefit from voice assistants, as these devices make many things easier that are no longer possible to do independently in everyday life: music can be played, radio plays can be read aloud or shopping lists can be created by voice command. But what does it actually mean to set up a voice assistant in a care home, where does the data go and what about data protection? What do staff and users need to know before setting up a device? Answers can now be found in an expert opinion from the law firm Richter, which was commissioned by the Nuremberg Nursing Practice Centre.

03.12.2019 - PPZ-Berlin at the Berlin Nursing Care Conference

PPZ Berlin

Under the title: Digital documentation in nursing - ways to greater efficiency and quality in nursing - practitioners and providers discussed this topic at the Berlin Nursing Conference on 7 November under the moderation of Tobias Kley (PPZ-Berlin). The panellists included Heiko Mania (PPZ-Berlin, Managing Director of NursIT), Björn Gorniak (connext - Vivendi product family) and Ute Stern (solimed Unternehmen Gesundheit). Digital documentation and the availability of data across sector boundaries is an important building block at PPZ-Berlin.

14.10.2019 - ‘Zukunft der Pflege’ conference: experts discuss technology and digitalisation

Cluster „Zukunft der Pflege“
  • Two-day ‘Zukunft der Pflege’ cluster conference with 330 guests and 15 exhibitors from the fields of robotics, service, smart home and sensor technology from all over Germany and Austria.
  • The latest research projects, services and products that make everyday care easier and enable people in need of care to participate more fully were presented in numerous talks.
  • The conference was organised by the Nursing Practice Centre (PPZ) Berlin as part of the ‘Zukunft der Pflege’ cluster.

The care sector has been undergoing major changes for some years now. Fewer and fewer carers are facing a higher number of older and sick people. Technological progress harbours completely new design possibilities here and will fundamentally change everyday nursing care.

People must take centre stage
The 2nd ‘Zukunft der Pflege’ cluster conference on 16-17 September 2019 presented digital solutions in care. ‘Digitalisation makes it possible for people to remain the focus of care,’ said Andreas Arentzen, Director of Human Resources at Johannesstift Diakonie, at the start of the event. The event offered the opportunity to discuss with stakeholders and experts with different backgrounds and to develop new perspectives. Futurologist Prof Dr Eckard Minx pointed out in his keynote speech: ‘Nobody really knows the future.’ The pace of change is now extremely rapid: for example, it took 75 years for the telephone to reach 100 million users, 16 years for mobile phones and just two years for social media apps. ‘We need to be prepared for this,’ emphasised Minx. Learning processes need to be reorganised so that we remain capable of acting and can take advantage of digitalisation. In concrete terms, this means that learning companies must act across organisations in order to survive in the future.
